The Fort Worth Modern Quilt Guld has challenged members with a block of the month project to last the whole year. I am going to use fabrics from my Kaffe Fassett stash.

Madrona Road Challenge
The Ft Worth Modern Quilt Guild took part in the Michael Miller QuiltCon Guild Challenge. We were given a packet of fat quarters a week or so before Christmas. The challenge was to show off the fabrics, using at least 2 from the packet, adding any additional from the line and up to 3 solids. Completed quilts had to be presented at the February meeting.
I needed more contrast and more changes in scale, so I hit Cabbage Rose, a local shop, to see what I could add from the fabric line. I already had white, charcoal and orange solids in my stash. I created a sampler with blocks from various books and a couple blocks that I made up for myself. These are the pics, front and back, from the January meeting.

I discovered that since I didn't especially care for this fabric that it was very easy to keep cutting it up! The net result has been two more quilts. The first is a Greek Cross tesselation. I am still quilting the outer border.
The second is a traditional strip quilt made with bars of improvisational log cabin blocks interspersed with squares. I'm begging friends for a few more inches of the yellow solid to complete the borders. I did learn that pieced-block tops are self-squaring (more or less), while a strip quilt can creep out of square fairly fast. It is also a pain to square and trim!
